- Free State National Botanical Garden
National Museum
The National Museum was first established in 1877, when it began collecting and displaying rarities from around the world. Today the museum focuses more on national history, culture and art. Here you will find live size fiberglass elephants, one of the earliest dinosaurs, a working beehive, snakes and other reptiles. The museum also hosts archeological material that includes the Florisbad Skull, one of the largest known dinosaurs. After an interesting day of sightseeing you can visit the museum’s Victorian-style restaurant or curio shop.
Bloemfontein Botanical Garden
This 70-hectare botanical garden host around 400 plant species. The best time to visit is probably the spring when most of the flowers are in bloom. This is a great place to relax and take in the beautiful surroundings.
Bloemfontein Zoo
Here you have the opportunity to spot the Big 5 as well as several antelope species, tigers, panthers, hippos and apes. You can also marvel at the various bird species and the unusual liger – a cross between a tiger and a lion.
Franklin Nature Reserve
This reserve is the only one in the world that is completely surrounded by a city. Inside the 250-hectare area you will find various birds, herds of springbok and eland as well as zebra.
San Du Plessis Theater
This theatre opened its doors in 1985 and often hosts opera, ballet, drama and music performances. It is one of the most modern theatres in the world with massive glass panels and beautiful works of art.
