History:
Bloemfontein is historically an Afrikaans settlement and was officially founded in 1864. In 1890 a railway was built connecting Bloemfontein and Cape Town. In 1899 the city was the site of the Bloemfontien Conference, which failed to prevent the Anglo-Boer War. During this war the city was used to house a concentration camp for Boer women and children. Today you will find the Women’s Memorial on the outskirts Bloemfontein, which pays tribute to the 28 000 women and children who lost their lives in the concentration camp. |
